This is a complete example of a late Victorian solar eyepiece.
Above the engraving is shown. It reads:"R. Damson 1890".

The eyepiece design is Huygenian. This uses two lenses which are both held in the brass barrel.
The third glass lens is the darkened one which does not magnify.

Above. The two knurled sections of brass near to the top of the eyepiece are well made.
Below those the coarse thread is shown which is used to attach the eyepiece to the telescope.

Above. The 1st element surround is engraved "50". This is only visible when the
darkened lens is removed. It is an indication of the power that the eyepiece would have given with it's original telescope.

The 2nd element is shown above. Although this eyepiece is in complete and working condition
it is in need of a service.

Above is the darkened lens which would have blocked most of the Sun's light. Despite this I
strongly recommend that this eyepiece is not used for solar observation as permanent blindness could occur. The total length of the eyepiece is 2 1/4"
long, 1 1/16" in diameter on the smaller end and 1 1/8" wide on the viewing end.
